How to Increase VRAM

While you can’t directly increase VRAM like you upgrade your computer’s RAM, there are ways to optimize usage and make the most of what you have.

Understanding VRAM

Dedicated vs. Shared: A dedicated graphics card has its own VRAM on the card. Integrated graphics (part of your CPU) borrow system RAM as VRAM.

The Slowdown: If you run low on VRAM, it can seriously impact game performance with stuttering and texture loading issues.

Methods to Make the Most of Your VRAM

1. Within Game Settings

The Most Direct: Nearly all modern games like Fortnite and Apex Legends come with graphics settings.

Target Resolution: Lowering resolution (from 4K to 1080p) dramatically decreases VRAM needs.

Texture Quality: Turn this down for a major VRAM savings trade-off.

Other Settings: Experiment with shadows, disabling anti-aliasing, and effects to see what offers the best balance of performance and VRAM usage.

2. Close Background Programs

Every Bit Helps: Web browsers, streaming apps and other programs can take away your system’s RAM. If you have integrated graphics that share this RAM it also affects available VRAM.

Before You Game: Take a moment to close anything that isn’t important to playing your game.

3. Windows Registry Tweak (Integrated Graphics Only)

Caution: Editing the registry can mess things up if done incorrectly. Only do it if you know what you’re doing.

Potential for Improvement: Helps you allocate more system RAM as VRAM for integrated graphics.

– Use the Windows Key + R and type regedit and press Enter.

– If you have Intel graphics, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel.

– If you have an AMD APU go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\AMD.

– Right click on the Intel/AMD folder and select New –> Key. Give it a name like GMM.

– Rick click the GMM folder in the right Windows panel. Click on New > DWORD (32 bit) Value.

– Give it a name like DedicatedSegmentSize and give it a value of the amount of VRAM you want the integrated graphics to have access to. If you have 8GB of system memory, 1024MB is a good option and if you have 16GB, 2048MB is fine.

4. The Ultimate Solution: Upgrade Your Graphics Card

The Hard Truth: If you’re consistently hitting VRAM limits this is the only way to get a significant boost.

Desktop Advantage: Upgrading is easy on desktops. Laptops are kind of limited in this sense.

Important Things

Software Tricks Have Limits: Software optimizations can only go so far. You can’t magically create VRAM that doesn’t physically exist.

VRAM Checks: Many games provide a VRAM usage indicator in their settings. Use this to see how close you are to the limit.
