USB C Port Pin Guide

USB-C: Small in Size, Big in Features

The USB C connector features 24 pins a significant increase compared to its predecessors.

Pin Groups

1. Power Pins (GND and VBUS):

– 4 pins handle ground (GND) connections for signal return paths.

– 4 pins are dedicated to power delivery (VBUS). These support higher voltages and currents for fast device charging and powering more demanding devices.

2. Legacy USB Pins (D+, D-, TX, RX):

– 2 pairs of pins carry the familiar USB 2.0 signals (D+ and D-). These are essential for backward compatibility with older USB devices.

– 2 pairs of pins (TX1/TX2, RX1/RX2) are used for SuperSpeed USB data transfer allowing the incredibly fast data rates of USB C.

3. Sideband Use (SBU)

– 2 pins act as multi purpose sideband channels. They can carry alternative protocols like DisplayPort or audio signals.

4. Configuration Pins (CC):

– 2 configuration pins (CC1 and CC2) are crucial for detecting cable orientation, negotiating power roles and managing alternate modes.

Key Points to Understand

Symmetry: The 24 pins are mirrored meaning the USB C plug can be inserted in either direction.

Versatility: USB C pins provide traditional USB capabilities, advanced data transfer, power delivery and even the ability to transmit video and audio.

Adaptability: The use of the sideband pins and configuration channels allows for the flexibility that makes USB C the connector for a wide range of devices.
